1.Holding
the Hook There are two common ways to hold a crochet hook. The first is to hold the hook between your thumb and index
finger like a pencil. (D18)
The second is to hold the hook in an overhand manner, like a knife. (D19)
There is no right or wrong way to hold a crochet hook. Try both methods and see which is most comfortable for you.
Many crochet hooks have a "thumb rest" to help your grip.
2. Holding the Yarn Here's one way to hold
the yarn. Feel free, however, to do what feels right for you. Holding the slip knot in your right hand, twine the yarn through
the fingers of your left hand.
Moving the slip knot to your left hand, lightly hold the knot between your thumb and
middle finger as shown. When you crochet, you will use the section of yarn that runs between the hook and your left index
finger. (D24)
Your index finger will move up and down as you work to create an even tension or tightness in the yarn.
3. Making the Slip Knot The first step in crochet is to make a slip knot. Making
a pretzel shape with the yarn, slip your hook into the pretzel. (D22)
Pull on both ends of the yarn to tighten and adjust the size of the knot and adjust the loop. (D23)
4. The chain stitch is the beginning stitch in crochet. Almost all pieces of crochet start
with a length of chain stitches. Begin by making a slip knot on hook, about 4 inches from yarn end. Making the chain: Yarn
over hook and draw yarn through loop on hook. One chain stitch made and one loop remains on hook. Continue until you have
the required number of chains indicated in the directions.
5. Single Crochet (sc) The single crochet is the shortest in height of
the 4 basic crochet stitches. Insert hook in 2nd chain from hook (under top loop) Yarn over hook and draw loop through stitch.
There are now 2 loops on hook. Yarn over hook again and draw loop through both loops on hook. Single Crochet
